Black Velvet Cupcakes are a delightful twist on the classic dessert, combining rich cocoa flavors with a striking black hue, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Combine the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and whisk until thoroughly mixed.
  3. Cream together the softened butter, sugar, and brown sugar in a separate bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Mix the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Incorporate the black food coloring until the batter is uniformly dark.
  7. Fill the cupcake liners about two-thirds full with the batter, then bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cupcakes in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

Tips for success include not overmixing and using room temperature ingredients for a fluffier texture.
